Colonel ASAN Q. BUI

Colonel Asan Q. Bui is the Commander, 927th Mission Support Group, MacDill AFB, Fla. Bui recently served as the Individual Mobile Augmentee to the Director, Enterprise IT Division at the HAF Chief Information Office.  He is responsible for Air Force service-wide employment of software application, cloud employment and enterprise agreement with industry.  Colonel Bui recently deployed as Director of Operations for the 443d Air Expeditionary Squadron overseeing over 300 personnel in support of all air operations in Iraq and Syria countering the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Prior to his current assignment, Colonel Bui served as commander, 920th Communications Flight, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida.  He was responsible for all communications requirements in support of the 920th Rescue Wing’s wartime mission equipped with six (6) C-130J airlift/tanker aircraft and 15 HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters to locate and recover U.S. Armed Forces personnel and coalition partners during military operations; peacetime mission is to provide safety, clearing and security surveillance of the Eastern Test Range during launches, civil search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief operations.

Colonel Bui is a 2000 graduate of Louisiana State University.  He was born on a U.S. Naval Carrier that later transported his family to a naval hospital in Agana Heights, Guam after the fall of Saigon ending the Vietnam War in May 1975.  His family escaped Vietnam by fishing boat and later found drifting in the South China Sea by U.S. Naval Carrier that transported his family and relatives to the first refugee staging base, Camp Asan, Guam.  They traveled multiple refugee camps from Guam to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas until sponsored by a Christian family in Port Arthur, Texas.  In 1994, he enlisted to the United States Navy as a yeomen submarine following his school graduation.  After separating, Colonel Bui attended Louisiana State University earning his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and received his commission to the United States Air Force.  Upon commission, Colonel Bui began technical training as a communications and information officer at Keesler AFB, Miss.  He was then assigned to Yokota Air Base, Japan as communications officer and base honor guard OIC.  In 2003, Colonel Bui was assigned at Joint Special Operations Command and forward deployed supporting Counterterrorism Joint Task Force operations and Special Mission Units in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Following his deployment, Colonel Bui was assigned to the Joint Communications Support Element as platoon leader, 2nd Joint Communications Squadron and J6 Directorate.  Upon his arrival, his unit was immediately tasked to provide humanitarian relief efforts in New Orleans, Louisiana following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and then Hurricane Rita in 2005.  In 2008, he separated from active duty and joined the Air Force Reserves to continue his service.  As a reservist, Colonel Bui has served multiple positions supporting aircraft maintenance, aeromedical evacuation, cyber, joint staff, acquisitions, and special operations.
