The 927th Security Forces Squadron, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, welcomed their newest commander at an assumption of command ceremony Oct. 14, held on Sunday of the Unit Training Assembly.

During the ceremony, the presiding officer, Lt. Col. Alan Tornay, acting commander of the 927th Mission Support Group, introduced Maj. Michael A. Varaly as the newest squadron commander.

“We are getting an outstanding leader not only on our base, but in the community as well,” said Tornay. “When we conducted his interview, one of the first things that he mentioned to me was that he wants to be in command of the best security forces squadron in the Air Force, from there I knew he was the right choice.”

Varaly began his career when he enlisted into the United States Air Force in August of 1998 as a Security Forces Apprentice. In March of 2002, after achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant, E-5, Major Varaly was awarded his commission through Officer Training School, at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

Varaly accepted the command with gratitude and optimism for the future of his squadron.

“Lt. Col Tornay, I thank you for believing in me, I couldn’t be happier to be here,” Varaly said. “To the defenders, before I arrived at this squadron, it was the best in the Air Force and now that I am here I am going to continue to push you all to be your absolute best as we accomplish even more in the near future.”
