A splash of training builds K-9 confidence

Tampa, Fla. --  On October 15, 2015, more than 20 dog team duos, two of which were 6th Security Forces military working dogs, ran through three exercises involving the dogs jumping into deep bodies of water and swimming to apprehend a decoy suspect at a water park in Tampa, Florida.

"Being a Florida-based dog team we may encounter water when having to apprehend a suspect," said Staff Sgt. Jennings Casey, 6th SFS MWD handler.

Although water training is not part of the standardized training, it is beneficial for the K-9s at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida since the base is surrounded by water. The base's 7.2 miles of coastline make its physical security unlike most Air Force bases.

"It is critical for the handlers to know their dogs can handle themselves in that type of environment," said Casey. "This training allows the dog to be safely introduced to controlled aggression in the water."

Although military and local police have two different missions, the knowledge from local K-9 units carries over to the military's day-to-day operations.

"The local units have years of experience that I do not have. This is an opportunity to train and share tactics to enhance our professional skill set," stated Casey.

There were dogs in attendance that have never seen water to this scale or been exposed to water scenarios. A few took to the water without an issue, whereas some were more timid. However, by the end of the day the dogs' confidence was sky-high.

"It's reassuring knowing how my dog reacts to different stimulants so if we come across this in our day-to-day operations, I'm already aware of his capabilities," stated Staff Sgt. Travis Bell, 6th SFS MWD handler.

The day was well spent building the confidence of not only the dogs, but also their handlers. These handlers can take comfort in knowing that regardless of the environment the dog will obey commands and apprehend a suspect.
