The difference between a successful combat or humanitarian mission and mission failure does not lie with just the Reservist; it also relies heavily on the support team in place.

During a ceremony held at Level 3 Communications, Tampa, Fla., June 17, one such supporter was recognized for going above and beyond.

"With Todd Mort's [Level3 Communications, senior manager] guidance and mentoring, I have exceeded what they are accustomed to as the standard.  Not only am I looking to make an impact on the company with my performance for my benefit, but as well for future hiring of military Guardsmen and Reservists," said Staff Sgt. Mark Mathis, 927th Logistics Readiness Squadron, fuel specialist.   "Todd Mort has broken the mold within Level 3.  He's prior Navy and knows what military members bring to the team concept and the overall work force."

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

"Being such a valuable asset to the team, Mark's deployments and military training requirements actually hurt us a little bit," said Todd Mort. "But what he brings to the table, the pros significantly outweigh the cons. We are fortunate to have Mark on our team."

The ESGR is a Department of Defense organization, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers.

The ESGR has many more awards for supportive employers with a nomination process that can be completed online http://esgr.mil/Service-Members-Family/Nominate-your-Employer.aspx
