A local employer was presented the Patriot Award from the Florida Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve office and a MacDill Air Force Base Reservist Sunday, June 7, here.

The Patriot Award is awarded to employers who go above and beyond to support the National Guard or Reserve military service of their employees.

Senior Master Sgt. Nathaniel Greenwich, 927th Force Support Squadron, training manager, nominated his boss, Carlos Garcia, for supporting his reserve commitments.

"Mr. Garcia stays late to perform duties to prevent an additional heavy load on me when I return from reserve duty," Greenwich said.  "He also sacrifices his projected off time to ensure my reserve requirements are met."

The Florida ESGR State Chairman Emeritus, Judge Gregory P. Holder, presented the award.

"When I saw this request come across my desk I knew who was going to present this, me," Holder said. "The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Airmen through a wide range of measures, and based on the nomination that Nathaniel submitted Mr. Garcia models the criteria."

Greenwich works for U.S. Southern Command in south Florida.

The award was held during a retirement ceremony for Greenwich, who served 29 years in the Air Force. He explained how important it was to show his gratitude to his employer on the same day he retired.

The ESGR is a Department of Defense organization, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers.

The ESGR has many more awards for supportive employers with a nomination process that can be completed online at http://esgr.mil/Service-Members-Family/Nominate-your-Employer.aspx.
